Turnbuckles

Today, turnbuckles belong on all ropes that need to be tensioned. Especially on boats turnbuckles are an important component, so tensioning elements run as maritime articles. To prevent corrosion, turnbuckles should always be installed in stainless steel.

Do you actually know what a turnbuckle is or why a turnbuckle is also called a turnbuckle? If you don't know and would like to know everything about turnbuckles made of steel or stainless steel, just stay on this page, because we would like to use this article exclusively to explain everything about these small but very visible helpers with the clamping elements. We would like to shed some light on points such as the exact construction of a turnbuckle or the function of such a clamping element. But we would like to address not only these important points, but also the materials from which such turnbuckles can be made today. Of course, we would also like to introduce some areas where such turnbuckles are used or give a short introduction to our stock programme. In the last article on this website, we would like to discuss how such turnbuckles can be manufactured in an economical way as turned or cast parts. However, we would now like to start with the construction of a turnbuckle. For a turnbuckle to be called a turnbuckle, it must of course be able to follow a clamping function. Such a turnbuckle always has a basic body that can take the two sides as threaded pins. These clamping hooks are then screwed into the base body opposite each other. Wires or chains as well as steel cables can be hooked into the hooks, which can be secured by a pin or hooked in without a pin. The function of such a turnbuckle made of steel or stainless steel is now, when the threaded pieces are screwed in where the tensioning hooks are located, that the suspended cables are now screwed in by turning the basic body. What now happens is the slow and powerful tensioning of the screwed-in threaded hooks or receptacles. Today, such turnbuckles are always used where ropes in industry have to be tensioned or railing parts are enclosed by tensioned ropes or wires. But also fence bracings as support wires are common practice today when using turnbuckles. When it comes to the material from which the turnbuckles can be manufactured, only the materials as steel or also as stainless steel in V2A or V4A are used. Stainless steel has become more and more established for turnbuckles because corrosion can be completely ignored. What would the world be without turnbuckles made of steel or stainless steel? We would like to get to the bottom of this question, because turnbuckles are used today in many areas of business and industry to perform a wide variety of tasks. As always, we would like to go into the most important questions that shed more light on the material properties and their exact construction of a lock for clamping. We would also like to talk about the assembly of turnbuckles and our stock range of all types of locks. Last but not least, the production of turnbuckles is certainly not uninteresting. But now we would like to start talking about the assembly. Turnbuckles always have a basic body, the actual turnbuckle. This is usually, if the material is steel, made of cast steel. This means that the basic body is manufactured in a casting process. But more about this later. If the basic body for the turnbuckle is made of stainless steel, this body is usually made of a very thick coiled sheet. On both sides of the turnbuckle there is a threaded hole. One side has a metric right-hand thread and the opposite side has a metric left-hand thread. The respective clamping screws are located in these two threads. These usually have an eyelet at the end. One of them has a metric right-hand thread and another one has a metric left-hand thread. If a wire is now hooked into both tensioning screws when mounting a turnbuckle, both screws can be moved towards each other by turning the base body. The turnbuckles start to tension the wire. In the case of a stainless steel base body, a round steel rod can be inserted into the middle bore to turn the base body. In the case of a cast body, this can be done by screw tightening. The basic turnbuckle is always made of bare steel with a cast body. This is also often in a galvanized version, so that little rust can set in. These locks are often used, for example, in fence construction. Whoever wants to have it naturally more elegant and more sophisticated, nowadays uses stainless steel turnbuckles. As a rule, these are completely sufficient as alloy V2A for outdoor use, unless you are near the sea, where salt water could attack. In this case you should always use the stainless steel V4A. Only this alloy for turnbuckles is absolutely protected against corrosion.

These safety elements have been increasing in the last years and could get the breakthrough in both variations of steels. On the one hand, the demand for turnbuckles made of steel as well as stainless steel (V2A and V4A) has increased more and more. This is due to the fact that, for example, more and more fences are being built where these locks are used and, on the other hand, stainless steel turnbuckles have become more and more popular because these indispensable boat accessories are used on yachts and boats. Especially the yachting industry uses exclusively the alloy of the stainless steel V4A, because the salt water is a constant companion. The production of turnbuckles

Turnbuckles Stainless Steel V2A V4ANow we have arrived once again in the last section at the big topic of turnbuckles. We have already been able to give you some information about the mode of operation of turnbuckles and how they are constructed. Of course, there are also people among you who would like to know how such turnbuckles are constructed. We don't want to keep you in suspense any longer and explain to you the production of turnbuckles that are turned and also turnbuckles made of stainless steel that are welded. Always in connection with an economic production. But we would like to start with the turned turnbuckles. These must be manufactured on a CNC lathe. Such lathes are always equipped with loading stations. These loader stations receive the raw material and when the CNC program has been loaded and the machine has been set up, the production of forks with metric thread as right-hand thread and left-hand thread can be produced. In the further process, the middle pieces are also turned as turned parts for the turnbuckles. The cross holes must be drilled and the threads on both sides of the turnbuckle must also be produced. With this cross bore the clamping at the lock can be made possible. Afterwards, when enough parts for the turnbuckle made of stainless steel have been turned, the assembly can start. When producing a turnbuckle as a welded version, the bent parts must first be cut as fork blanks on a laser machine. These can then be straightened to a fork head on a folding bench. These clevises must now be securely welded to the threaded bolts, which are available as right-hand and left-hand threads. For this purpose, the fork head for the turnbuckles is welded on by an automatic circular welding machine. This process is repeated over and over again until enough individual parts for the assembly of a welded turnbuckle made of stainless steel have been produced. These too are now all screwed into the existing base body and completed as final assembly. If enough turnbuckles are assembled, they will go to our warehouse and will be shipped to you when you order online (purchase). Now we have come back to the last section and so we would like to give you some information about the production of turnbuckles, so that you can assess this process and know how these special safety elements can be produced. In the case of a turnbuckle, there are a total of three individual parts, two of which have to be produced in a different way and the middle part, i.e. the clamping body itself, which is a steel turnbuckle, has to be produced by casting. But let us now say a few words about this. The turnbuckles themselves are produced on a wire bending machine. First the metric left-hand thread is rolled and then the metric right-hand thread. Finally, the eyelets on each side of the turnbuckles are bent. The middle piece, the turnbuckle itself, is produced in a wax-lost process, as already mentioned. This is a cast part, which must be produced as a positive impression as a wax piece. This procedure is usually carried out in a 3D print process, in which a hard layer of wax is created, which has exactly the same outer contours as the turnbuckle itself. Once the wax mould is finished, it can be dipped into a mud mould. Then, as with all casting processes, the sludge layer is fired in a furnace. Now the outer layer of wax is fired hard and in the same process the inner wax softens and starts to evaporate. Finally the mud layer is hard fired and the wax is burned out. A shell has been created. This can now be filled with either a cast steel alloy or liquid stainless steel (V2A or V4A). Once this manufacturing process has been completed, the sludge cover can be removed. The turnbuckle made of stainless steel or cast steel is finished. Now, after the final cooling down, the reworking is done by drilling the holes into the respective ends and cutting the threads. Finally, the two turnbuckles are screwed into the body. Now the finished turnbuckles can be stored in our warehouse and if you order them via the online shop, the locks can be shipped to you. After some days with the transport company, you should receive the turnbuckles by parcel.
