Screws are probably the best known of all fastening options in the large family of fasteners. They always have the task of connecting two separate components or assemblies, which function as separate, separate parts without a screw, by means of a screw connection securely and detachably. No other type of connection has the advantage of loosening the screw connection again if necessary. And this without having to damage or destroy the bolted connection as well as the components or assemblies. This is a very advantageous feature that only a bolted connection can provide.
Many questions often arise as to exactly what a screw is and how to describe it in a few words. In order to clarify the definition of a screw, we would like to take a closer look at the most important corner points of this fastening element. A screw is always a cylindrical or conical pin or body with a long or short wire-like shape. Starting at one end there is always a thread, which can start pointed towards the head (as a wood screw thread) or start as a blunt machine thread. The screw head is always located on the opposite side of the pin. This has two functions. On the one hand it serves as a stop when the screws are screwed into a fastening part and on the other hand as a mounting for the respective drive. In the screw head there is the integrated drive, which can either hold a screwdriver or any other tool. The head can also be equipped with a hexagon. This contour also allows other tools, such as an open-end wrench, to be used to fasten and loosen screws. Finally, it can be said that a screw is a releasable connection and can be opened and closed at any time. Exceptions are only the one-way screws.
The construction of screws
The construction, no matter what kind of screw it is, is always the same. The head is always attached at the beginning of the head. This is extremely important because on the one hand it is the stop edge when the screws are inserted into the components to ensure a secure fit and on the other hand it can also be used as a holder for counter-support, such as wrenches and/or ring spanners or Allen wrenches. It can take many different forms, depending on requirements and as an optical design on the components or assemblies. Furthermore, the pin or bolt with the thread is always located from the head down, which is fed through the holes of the components or assemblies to securely fasten the washer and nut. When the bolt is tightened with the washer and nut, the nut is always turned to the right to tighten the bolt connection. The connection is always loosened by turning it to the left. In order to ensure a firm fit when applying the torque, tools such as ring spanners, open-end spanners, screwdrivers and/or Allen keys are used again. These can be attached to the screw head or nut and inserted. After tightening or loosening, these tools are no longer required.
What types of screws are there?
During the last one hundred years, the screw connections have been continuously developed and many new types of screws have been developed, which have been created for very special applications to meet all possible demands and also optical requirements. Here we have to distinguish between screws which are screwed into a wood joint or screws with a machine thread? These questions have to be answered in advance, because these questions are essential for the selection of the right screw connection. Screws for wood threads do not have any possibilities to take up a counter nut and thus to connect two components by a continuous bore. Only screws that have a machine thread and a locknut, as mentioned above in the article, can meet this requirement. In order to provide you with a quick overview of all types of screws, please have a look at this article in the categories to find the right type of screw with the right diameter and length as well as the right head for your building project or your type of fastening. Our selection enables you to quickly purchase the right screws from us, even in the smallest sales units. Please put the desired quantity in the basket and you can buy exactly the quantity of screws you really need and not 1000 of the packages where 20 screws are needed and 980 remain.
The construction of a screw connection with nut
In this article, we would like to explain to you in more detail what a professional screw or bolt connection should look like so that it can withstand loads and complies with the standards. In the case of a wood screw connection equipped with a wood thread, the screw is screwed into a soft material such as wood. It should be noted that the screw bw is screwed in before it is screwed in, always contains a washer or a K-washer, which can absorb the compressive force of the surface and thus does not allow the head of the screw to press into the soft wood material. The position of a machine screw with a machine thread is slightly different. With this screw connection, as already mentioned, the screw is inserted through existing holes and secured with a nut. It is important to make sure that a washer is placed under the head of the screw and also between the component and the nut at the other end of the screw connection. In this example, the washers also serve to ensure that no impressions are made in soft materials such as wood or aluminium and that the torsional friction that occurs when tightening is dissipated into the washers.

The production of screws
The production of all conceivable screws used to be carried out on so-called conventional screw machines. In principle, these were the first cam-type automatic lathes. The program was placed on a cam disk and the raw material was clamped in the lathe chuck. The screws were then manufactured and machined according to the same mechanical pattern. Today this is a little different. This means that cam-type automatic lathes no longer have to be set up to produce the correct screw. Today, production at the manufacturers takes place on modern CNC automatic lathes, which have short set-up times and therefore programs can be quickly loaded and adjusted. As a rule, modern automatic lathes always have a loader docked on, which can pick up the raw material in the form of strand material and thus feed it into the machines. Today, as then, hexagonal raw material, for example, is loaded in the loader, which already has the correct wrench width to produce the screws quickly and effectively. The machines can also run in night mode, unmanned, and thus produce the screws very cost-effectively. During the manufacturing process, the raw material is first drawn into the machine and clamped in the lathe chuck. Once this process has been completed, the shank can be screwed onto the screw. Then the chamfering is done at the beginning of the screw. Once this process is completed, the thread is cut open. Once all these steps have been completed, the almost finished screw can be cut off and falls into the collection container before being sold to you in our online shop.
