Nuts

Nuts belong to the wide range of fastening elements. So nuts can be used to quickly make a connection with a screw. Nuts are often made of steel or stainless steel.

I suppose everybody knows about nuts? After all, the nut is certainly the best known fastening element - after the screw - in the large family of nuts. Over the past centuries, it has secured its place in the fasteners, after the screw, of course. Today, nobody can do without nuts made of stainless steel, because they are used in all imaginable systems, machines, components or workpieces where more than one component has to be connected to a second one in a detachable way. When you hear one of these nuts, many people actually always think of the common hexagon nut. This is no coincidence, as this is the most commonly used nut for all fasteners. All other nuts are used far less, but still have an enormous importance for the correct fastening possibility. We have created a blog post on this subject, which reveals a few more things about stainless steel nuts. If you are interested, just read the article once. For nuts made of stainless steel, only two different alloys are used for both indoor and outdoor applications. On the one hand it is the stainless steel V2A, which is an alloy that can withstand most weather conditions. Who of course uses his nuts made of stainless steel for outdoor applications near the sea, should definitely use the stainless steel V4A for his project. Because this alloy also defies the aggressive salt water, which would otherwise, in the long run, under certain circumstances, clog the V2A stainless steel.

The different types of nuts

In the large family of nuts there are countless varieties of nuts, which we would like to introduce to you briefly. Of course, we would like to give you only a small overview, as we cannot introduce every single nut here, but we can give you a rough overview anyway. Nuts are actually always used together with screws and threaded rods, but also with washers in various shapes. This is the only way to produce professional screw connections. The following nuts belong to the large group of stainless steel fasteners:

The best known - the nut with hexagon as standard nut

Nuts Stainless Steel V2A V4AThe hexagonal nut is probably the best known nut among all fastening elements. This nut can be found in all technical equipment in mechanical engineering or in almost every component that we find around us or use every day. This nut can be tightened easily with an open-end wrench or a ring spanner or can be opened again if required. A fastening element, perfect for almost every application. Another nut in the family is the hexagon nut 3 x D high and the hexagon nut 1.5 x D high.

Knurled nuts - Cap nuts - Lock nuts - Round nuts

Knurled nuts are nuts that can be easily unscrewed and tightened using only the force of your hands. Perfectly suited for quick manual loosening of moulded parts in fixture construction. Or the group of cap nuts when nuts are closed at the end and there is no risk of injury from protruding threads. A further category are the locknuts, which are used when components have to be secured - for example, against vibration. Or the round nuts, which are often used in technical systems as switch nuts to control switching operations, either mechanically or by actuating sensors.

The weld nuts - square nuts - sleeve nuts and the wing nuts

Nuts Stainless Steel V2A V4AWeld nuts are an integral part of mechanical engineering and locksmith's shops and quickly turn thin-walled material into thick-walled material by welding the nuts on. Another type of nuts are the square nuts, which can be easily pushed into profiles and thus create a detachable connection to aluminium profiles without even drilling a hole. A further group is the sleeve nut, which is often used in stainless steel square profiles to create form-fit exterior views and to set optical highlights (design). And finally the wing nuts, which are also used in jig and fixture construction to position parts quickly by hand without tools.

The threaded sleeves - slotted nuts - the castle nuts and the shear nuts

Threaded sockets are a very special type of nut, because they are used to extend threaded rods and thus make one out of two or use other screw connections. The slotted nuts are nuts which have a special shape due to the slot and can therefore often be operated with special tools. Now we come to the crown nuts made of stainless steel, which, as the name suggests, have a crown and can also be used as locking nuts to quickly secure axles and shaft bearings by means of a split pin. Another group are the shear nuts, which are a so-called "disposable nut". Here the hexagon head is simply turned off and the nut cannot be loosened (at least not that easy, actually only by destroying it).

The set nuts - drive-in nuts - rampa sleeves - two-hole nuts - the slotted nuts and threaded inserts

Nuts Stainless Steel V2A V4AWith the set nuts, simply drill holes and press the nut into the hole. The knurling holds it firmly in the material. The stainless steel drive-in nuts are exclusively intended for screw connections in wooden constructions where the connection does not have to be made with wood screws but with a metric thread. The purpose of the rampa sleeves is to prepare soft to medium-hard material so that a screw connection with a metric thread can be made. The two hole nuts are special nuts, which can only be opened and closed with a hook spanner. The thread inserts are not actually nuts in that sense, but they also have an internal thread and an external thread to make / keep worn threads in aluminium parts or soft steel operational again and thus avoid expensive new production of components (cost reduction). The number nuts are also special nuts that can only be opened and closed with a hook wrench - very often used to precisely justrate bearings on spindles.

The production of nuts from steel or stainless steel - V2A or V4A

In order to produce nuts in all imaginable sizes and shapes, CNC machines are required to carry out the construction of the nuts. This means that the CNC controlled machine usually also has a bar feeder connected to the rear end of the jaw chuck. The advantage of this loader is that the raw material can easily be inserted bar by bar and the machine can then work unmanned all night long and reload the material itself as required. As a raw material it is nowadays simply possible that if, for example, a nut with an external hexagon is to be produced, the raw material is already hexagonal and has the appropriate key size. Once the raw material is loaded into the CNC machine system and securely clamped with the jaw chuck, the production of the nuts can begin. The material is usually stainless steel V4A or V2A or pure construction steel. First the core bore is inserted into the material and drilled. Once this is done, the chamfer is placed on the outside of the nut and turned cleanly. Afterwards it is ready to cut the thread. Once this process is completed, the almost finished nut can be cut off. Afterwards only the opposite chamfer has to be turned on the nut. If the last operation is also completed, the nut is ready for trade and for sale in the warehouse.
